Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a mother of both black and white parents. She grew up on her mom's side. Her skin shade made her feel rejected in her youth. Her parents were struggling financially and had to relocate sixteen times in order to take on her father's work. Russell said that despite the struggles they faced, there was always an opportunity to reinvent, to make something fresh. Russell's parents faced financial hardship and she was constantly traveling. When she turned 18, she took her first acting class, and finally found her place. She saved the money from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work when her cash was gone, and then start auditioning again. This routine was followed for four more years until she was offered her first television part.
